Tips #1: Improving Whispernet Coverage for Kindle

One of the great things about the Kindle reader is the free Whispernet access on the Sprint network. It allows you to download books and free samples straight to your device, any time of day or night as long as you have coverage.

Personally, I don't get coverage for anything at my house - cell phone, wireless internet, TV signals without cable.... so I wasn't surprised when I couldn't get Whispernet either. I download my books via USB through my computer or I take a little stroll around my yard to get Whispernet coverage.

But here's a trick to improve the signal that I learned at Amazon's Kindle community:

  • Turn on your Whispernet service
  • Go to Menu & click settings
  • Type in 411.
This takes a minute or two but gives some general info about your device. Line 1 may have the words "UP, UP, UP" or it may say "DOWN, DOWN, DOWN".
  • If it says "DOWN, DOWN, DOWN", click BACK, and type in 611 & wait for a page refresh
  • Now go back to the 411 page - has it changed to UP, UP, UP?
If so, your Whispernet coverage should have improved.

Many users have reported success with this. Alas, it hasn't worked for me so far so I certainly don't promise this is a fix for all, but since it works for some it's worth a try!
