Amazon.com - Read eBooks using the FREE Kindle Reading App on Most Devices
You don't need a Kindle to read Kindle books. Amazon offers apps for tablets and for computers. I really like the PC app for organizing books (click and drag into folders) that can sync to my Kindle devices. It's also handy for non-fiction reference books, like cookbooks, and for copy & paste.
But importantly, they make ebooks accessible to anyone with a device of some kind. Most devices are covered - iPods, tablets, Android phones, Macs and PCs. Let your friends know about it!
