You might have seen these little games floating around Facebook and other social media.

Did you make it through to the end? How did you do? I found it fascinating that I could fly through that.

How about the next one?

I think that one was a little trickier!

I share these because I think they are powerful ways to demonstrate the need for an author to have an independent and thorough proofreader. Both of these examples are vastly different to one another, yet both show how easy it can be for your brain to slide by misspellings and mistakes because it can make a good assumption about what should be on the page.

This is why, I believe, writers really cannot easily proofread their own work, no matter how well-educated or well-read. Not only do they have the abilty to skip mistakes, as the examples above show, writers are also at the disadvantage of knowing what the sentence is supposed to say, and therefore the brain can insert what should be there and remove what should not.

Proofreading is not really about 'enjoying reading' -- though good reading skills are very important. Proofing is about painstakingly reading, re-reading, and re-reading a sentence again to spot the errors. Out loud, if necessary. That's how I spotted the mistake in example number 2, above. Read it out loud, or have it read to you, and the mistakes jump out at you.

If you still don't trust yourself -- and honestly, you probably shouldn't -- then do yourself a favor and find a proofreader. A trusted friend or a professional, either way there are people out there to help. And if you pick a friend and they do a good job, treat them to a gift card or something for their trouble. They might well know you are a starving artist and that you asked them because you couldn't splurge on a pro, but a little 'thank you' treat goes a long way.
Unfortunately I didn't check out fast enough and lost them, and before I knew it they were all sold out until May 2017.

I searched various options, signed up for the wait list, looked on Ebay and StubHub (way too expensive!), and waited to try the Friday Forty (where 40 tickets are put on sale each Friday for the following week). In the end, I decided to try my luck in person. We planned to be in London a few days after the opening of the play, and decided to try out for some return tickets. We got lucky and here is how!

Returned tickets are those which someone no longer wants. They are given back to the box office and resold. They cannot be purchased on the website, but only at the box office on the day of the performance. I suggest you arrive early! We arrived as the box office opens, at 10am, but there was already a queue of about 30 people. I recommend arriving earlier as I literally got the last returned ticket as the show started.

The procedure is that, as tickets are returned to the box office, a representative comes out and offers the ticket(s) to the first folks in the queue. There may be no returned tickets at all, there really is no way to know how many there will be. If there are any, the theater resells them at the actual price of the ticket and some are cash only (they let you pop to the ATM across the street, if need be).

Ticket prices vary and the play is in 2 parts so you have to buy both if they are available. If the person at the front doesn't want to pay the price of that ticket, it is offered to the next person. This is how, with 5 minutes before the start of the play, we managed to get tickets! Full price tickets came up and even though we were not yet at the front, we were the only folks willing to pay for them. We were not all seated together but we didn't mind. Note though, kids under the age of 15 are required to sit with an adult, so if you are going with a child, you might have to wait it out for a pair of tickets.

One other caveat--they only allow one ticket per person. You cannot line up and get one for anyone else. If your friend, spouse, kids want tickets too, they must be in the queue and wait it out like everyone else.

The story itself didn't live up quite as high as my expectations but I admit that my expectations were extremely high. The whole experience though was tremendous and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

If you want to get tickets for next year, as of this morning, there are still a few tickets available on the website but not many. The site say some returned tickets will come available through the site on occasion (especially tickets returned by touts, as they do have systems in place to try to limit touts selling tickets).
They argued it was not price fixing as Amazon and others were just selling venues and couldn't set their own pricing for someone else's product. Amazon disagreed and apparently, so did the US attorney general.

Over the course of the past few years, there have been lawsuits against the publishers and Apple. We've seen a couple of outcomes already, with book credits being issued to people who bought books and "overpaid" during the Agency Model period. My credits were about $50 one time, and $10 another.
This month's featured author is Al Past, author of the series Distant Cousin. The first few books of this series were among the first I read on my Kindle in 2009/10 & I really enjoyed talking to Al about the interesting female lead, Ana Darcy. Since then, Al has written a couple more books in the series. Here's Al Past....

It's such a delight to be a featured author-person on eReader1. I've followed eReader1 for years and credit it for many of the Kindle tricks I happen to know. Not only that, Danielle reviewed my fourth book, Distant Cousin Regeneration, here! Now, she has graciously given me permission to tinker with the questions I've been asked. I'll jumble them together in the interest of discourse, but do my best to cover most.

What are you reading now?

It's embarrassing, but I'm rereading my Distant Cousin series, for the first time in a long time. I am doing this because I am preparing to write another in the series and I have to be as careful as I can to avoid continuity goofups. I occasionally consult previous volumes as I work on the next one, of course, but I find reading them front to back is a quite different experience. A high school librarian wrote me that she always wishes she could read them again for the first time. I now have an inkling what she means. In rereading, what stands out for me now is the sequencing of scenes, the pacing. For instance, I worried that one particular book did not hang together as well as I might have wished, but now, reading straight through it, I see that it does hang together. The humor comes through too, which is nice to know (since I wanted it to).

Can you describe your typical writing day?

I was a college English professor for 30 years. My mantra that whole time was "Write for the reader! Serve the reader! Make it easy for the reader!" That is my philosophy, and my basic approach to writing. I made a career of critiquing writing, but I didn't know if I could write something people might enjoy reading. A good friend convinced me to try the first chapter and that was how I began to find out: I can.
I write slowly. Carefully. A half page a day, after editing the previous day's half page. Then, later, over and over again from the beginning. Some writers blast through an entire draft and then go back and whack and rearrange massively. Not me, not so much. As an English prof, I was a professional editor, but even so, I make sure to have at least a couple "beta readers" with good taste and good ears.

How did you come up with your story idea?

Or to rephrase that as a reader asked it: "The concept of Distant Cousin is so surprising. It seems obvious after a few pages, yet no other writer has ever used it. How did you come up with it?"
It came to me about ten years before I retired. The details would take pages, but the basic idea that the reader asked about is simply this: one day in our present time an alien from another planet lands on earth...but the catch is that the alien is human. She's from a group of people who were moved away from earth several thousand years previously, and she was the first one to find her way back. If you or I or anyone had met her we'd have assumed she was a crazy person. But she has information she really, really needs us to believe. So what happens then? And after that, what happens to her? The result, as daughter #2 says, is a "West Texas Chicano action/adventure/romance, with a little bit of science fiction."

Did you self publish?

Yes, I did, and I have no regrets, although I must add several caveats. In my particular case I have no skills as a promoter, no talent for promotion, and no inclination to promote my work very much. I'm a writer. That's what I enjoy. I'm a retired guy. I'm not doing this for the dough. Promotion, as far as I am concerned, is much harder than writing, and writing is plenty hard enough if it's done well. Besides, even if one publishes traditionally, the publisher still expects the writer to do most or all of the promotion.

So it's by pure dumb luck that a media agent in Hollywood, and his wife, loved Distant Cousin. It's of even more great good fortune that he has found an experienced screenwriter/producer who believes Distant Cousin will make a great a miniseries for TV. He's going to begin work on it next month, knock on wood.

But don't ask me for advice! Many people have congratulated me, adding that they "cannot wait to see Distant Cousin on tv," although they have not read the books and probably never will, even though they can have them right now for Kindle for the price of a burger, drink, and fries at McDonald's. Non-readers, or just lazy? I cannot say. Never mind. I'm a writer. That's what I enjoy.

I know several questions remain, but they seem for writers. I write for readers. (See above.) Nothing is more boring than a writer going on and on about writing--I should know. Everyone's different anyway. If any writers are reading this, good luck to you, folks!

Surprise us with something we don't know about you.

I played baroque trumpet (the little bitty high-pitched one) for twenty years. The first book I ever published was trumpet duets which I arranged from Bach's (and others) organ works, chamber music, and so forth. If you happen to play a treble clef instrument, Google Charles Colin Publications and search for my name. They're great duets. I quit the trumpet in recent years. I was afraid of getting an aneurysm and croaking on the spot.

In The Power of the Other by Dr. Henry Cloud, there are many insights that affirm notions that I have felt, but have not had the courage or confidence to act upon, and Dr. Cloud backs up many of his assertions with simplified neuro-science as well as anecdotal evidence that we can all relate to.

Cloud focuses a lot on work and business relationships, but we can equally apply every concept to family relationships and friendships. He examines 4 corners of relationships, and helps you determine where yours fit, and how they impact your brain, mind and heart—emotionally and physically.

You know how I know this book works? Because it was the “other” that had the “power” to lift my hope and spirit, to help me recognize which relationships are positive Corner 4 relationships and how I can be a Corner 4 friend, parent and boss. It has encouraged me to recognize the great things in many of my relationships, and to realize which ones are worthy of my time and energy, and which ones I might need to shield myself from, or confront with honest integrity. Some of his anecdotes from working within successful businesses have provided me with great ideas that I can incorporate in my own business with our core values, and within our team interactions, while his honest reflections of a past failing business teach us all about the great opportunities we could have if we would just shift how we view those failures.

While we may know some of this intellectually, Dr. Cloud’s stories and psychology seal it with defined purpose and action, helping us to not just see how our behavior changes our lives, but how everyone’s behavior and words have tremendous power to lift other people far beyond what they can do alone.

I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.

Featured Author of the Month: Mark Pettinger

Q&A by Susan Lobban, originally posted on our eReader1 UK facebook page, 2015

Mark is the author of detective mystery books The Decalogue (DCI Priest Series Book 1) and Tick Tock Time's Up (DCI Priest Series Book 2)

1. How did you decide to become an author? What/Who inspired you?

Mark – I had been fascinated by true crime books for years, and once I had digested all that I could get my hands on I decided to turn to crime fiction. At the time I was driving a lot and had little time to read a physical book, so I invested in my first audio book – a Rebus novel from Ian Rankin. There was no going back from there. I consumed everything that I could get my hands on from Rankin, before expanding my selection into Val McDermid, Mark Billingham and so on. But, my inspiration was definitely Ian Rankin. In terms of why I decided to ‘take up the pen’, put quite simply, there is an old cliché that everyone has a book inside them, and as I sat a continued to read Rankin, I thought do you know what, I can do this. Somewhat of a blasé and arrogant personal statement at the time….but time has shown that I do have it in me – and I enjoy it immensely.

2. Can you describe your typical writing day?

Mark – At present, I am not a full time writer. As such I need to wrap my writing around my day job, which generally means whipping out the old laptop in hotel rooms, airport lounges or on the York to London train. Occasionally I am fortunate to be able to dedicate a sustained period of focus for my writing – say 24/48 hours, this is when I make some real progress with my current WIP.

3. How do you come up with your plot lines/characters?

Mark – LOTS of coffee! No seriously, lots of coffee. Well, not quite. Three years ago I was on a business trip to India, the return flight was long and through the night. Personally, I am unable to sleep on an aeroplane, so I took advantage of the 8-hour self-imposed captivity, and I managed to create and develop a number of plot lines that might serve me for another 3 or 4 books.

I knew when writing the debut, that DCI Priest was going to be as series, so I spent a considerable time developing all of the character profiles and back stories (name, age, physical description, traits/habits, education, work experience, love life). Each of the main characters has a documented profile some 8/10 pages deep. Some of the characters are loosely based on people I know; either partial names or physical descriptions, or some of those annoying habits they have – I couldn’t possibly reveal which friends though.

4. Do you know how your book will end before you start writing or does it sometimes change along the way?

Mark – I always know how the book starts, and how it will end…the middle always changes along the way. My writing style is to understand the main plot, and any sub-plots and to be clear on the start and end of the book. From there I try to map out the structure of each chapter, and key events along the timeline, so I know what is happening as I write….BUT, things change, and that’s fine. You accept change if it is for the better. When you are working through the story, line by line, you know far more than you did when you first sat down to map out the end-to-end storyline. So yes, the story changes, although I have to be honest, it doesn’t fundamentally move from the main storyline that I developed prior to penning the first word, first chapter.

5. Do you ever get writer's block and if so how do you get through it?

Mark – I haven’t experienced a significant, or serious, period of writer’s block. Of course I get the odd time when I can’t seem to find the right words – my brain runs at 1000mph, but sometimes the messages don’t reach my fingers. To remedy this, I simply walk away from the laptop and do something completely different for an hour, before returning to pick up where I left off. They say that a change is as good as a rest, and a short-term change of focus, or activity, seems to do the trick.

6. What advice would you give aspiring writers?

Mark – Firstly know that you can do it; you can. Everyone can write a short story, novella or novel. Your first attempt might not be very good, but who cares? Go back to it and refine it, and keep doing so until you are happy with it. Once you are 100% happy with what you have written, I guarantee it will still be rubbish because you are the only one that has seen it. Now you need to engage with your beta readers; send your work to several people to read it and provide you with some constructive feedback. Whilst it is tempting to use your family or friends, I would urge against this as they will generally provide positive feedback ‘because it’s you’. Once you have implemented the changes derived from the beta reader feedback (and you will be amazed at how obvious their constructive feedback is – wow, how did I not see that?) you should send your work to an editor and / or proof-reader. Once again, upon the receipt of their feedback you will realise how far from perfect it was……but this is good….you are continually learning, and your work is getting better after each draft.

The point is this; if you want to write, then write. If you feel that you have it in you; then go for it. You need to apply yourself appropriately as it’s a long haul, but the rewards are, well, wonderfully intangible. It doesn’t matter how many books you sell, or how much royalties you make; the feeling of achievement trumps all the tangible rewards (says the man who doesn’t have JK Rowling’s bank balance).

7. What are you reading right now?

Mark - At the minute I am trying to get started on Luke Delaney’s Cold Killing and The Keeper. This is an author I have been trying to read for some time; if time continues to escape me, I will take them both on holiday this summer.

8. Which do you prefer kindle or paper books?

Mark – There is certainly a place for both formats, and with the exponential growth in all things digital, we can expect more and more of us to be reading a digital book. However, I think it will a couple of generations before paper books eventually die out (like the VHS cassette or Vinyl record). Sorry, back to your question; whilst I read both, I do prefer a physical book.

9. Did you self publish? Do you think this a good or bad thing for the future of books?

Mark – I did self-publish the debut DCI Priest book The Decalogue. Like most aspiring authors, I did an initial round of agent query letters, sending off my first three chapters and a synopsis; then sat back and waited for the inevitable rejection letters. I’m one of the most optimistic people you will ever meet, but even I know that the odds are stacked against you. Even if you have a great story, wonderfully told with engaging characters, and the clear potential for a long running series; you may still be rejected because ‘that genre is so packed right now’ or ‘we already represent enough writers in your genre’.
My personal opinion is that self-publishing is good for the industry, good for the writer, and good for the reader. There are so many great writers out there who would not be read were it not for their desire to publish their stories and let the public decide. I know a few authors that self-published their first book, then went on to publish their second/third by more a traditional route – no doubt catching the eye of those agents and publishers that rejected their debut.
I’m not cynical about the traditional publishing process, good writers with good stories will always find a way to bring their books to the public – and all power to them (and me!)

10. For someone who has not read your books before, how would you describe your writing style?

Mark – Within the genre of crime fiction, my books are best described as a morphing between a sturdy police procedural with an emotional thriller. As such, my writing style is relatively detailed and descriptive, ensuring that the characters back stories and known and presented in support of the plot / sub-plot. Attention to detail is key, with extensively researched, and described, process and procedures, locations, buildings, and so on. I don’t take the descriptive detail to the n’th degree like Dan Brown (Da Vinci Code), but the detail is where the devil lives.

11. Do you have any new books in the pipeline?

Mark – The second in the DCI Priest series Tick Tock Time’s Up will be published summer 2015. The story follows DCI Priest and his team as they try to locate a young boy that has been kidnapped; but after the kidnapper unusually establishes contact, the team know that they have finite timeline within which to save the boy’s life; and the clock is ticking.

12. Where is the best place for readers to find out more about you?

Mark – Visit my website www.markpettinger.com

13. Surprise us with something we don't know about you?

Mark – So, as well as fitting the writing in around a day job and a young family, I also find time to coach an U11 football team

14. and very importantly..... which do you prefer tea or coffee?

Mark – Coffee, preferably a latte.

Amazon recently announced critical updates to wireless connectivity for older Kindle e-Readers. This does not apply to newer (2013+) Kindles or Kindle Fires.

For those of you with older Kindles, I have received multiple messages seeking some assistance. Note that if you did not get this done in time, 1) your kindle may have already updated last time you synced, 2) you can still do it manually if you are no longer able to connect to the internet. Instructions at the link:

Which version do you need
From Home, press the Menu button, and then select Settings. You will see the current software version at the bottom of the screen.

Kindle 1st Generation (2007) 1.2.1
Kindle 2nd Generation (2009) * 2.5.8
Kindle DX 2nd Generation (2009) * 2.5.8
Kindle Keyboard 3rd Generation (2010) ** 3.4.2 or higher
Kindle 4th Generation (2011) 4.1.3 or higher
Kindle 5th Generation (2012) 4.1.3 or higher
Kindle Touch 4th Generation (2011) ** 5.3.7.3 or higher
Kindle Paperwhite 5th Generation (2012) ** 5.6.1.1 or higher

All other Kindles are newer and are ok!

Though the deadline is here, I would still attempt a wireless update. Plug in your Kindle. Turn on Wifi and leave it for a few hours.Turn it back on & check for updates.

If your kindle receives this message, you might need to manually install the update: "Your Kindle is unable to connect at this time. Please make sure you are within wireless range and try again. If the problem persists, please restart your Kindle from the Menu in Settings and try again."

Eight Solid 5 Star Novels That Will Keep You Turning Pages

I have had the good fortune to have read all of the Sasha McCandless series—some I purchased, some I was given eARCs and I have posted honest reviews of all her books. Irreparable Harm starts with Sasha being considered for partnership in a prestigious law firm. She is given a case where a plane belonging to one of the firm's clients crashes. It isn't long before what appeared at first glance to be an easy case blossoms into a real thriller. Someone is controlling the planes via a cell phone. Sasha uses all her legal knowledge and the help of her boyfriend, Leo Connelly, to bring this case to a conclusion. I was hooked on Melissa Miller as an author from about the middle of the second chapter.

The other seven volumes in this set follow somewhat similar paths. Ms Miller picks a somewhat vague legal premise and weaves a believable tale around it. Sasha leaves the big law firm and strikes out on her own. Various characters appear in different books, she gets a partner from her previous firm, she gets married, and some characters, like Aroostine Higgins, disappear, only to show up in another series of legal thrillers. Each new book picks up from the previous and goes off in an unpredictable direction which is thoroughly enjoyable and somewhat unexpected.

I gave all these books a solid 5 STAR rating and I am eagerly awaiting the latest Sasha novel along with the newest Aroostine Higgins novel. Well done Melissa Miller and thank you for some wonderful stories.

As soon as Annie steps foot in the Dandelion Cafe she is transported back to the days when she would sit at one of the tables with her dad chatting over a plate of infamous Cherry Pie. Unfortunately that time in her life is long gone and now that she has made a life for herself in London she has no reason to be back on Cherry Pie Island, until now. Enid the manager her Dad left in charge has died and now the cafe’s legacy is in Annie’s hands. Looking around it is plain to see that not much has changed since she was last there and that is not a good thing. She had no intention of running the cafe, but at the same time she is set against her brother’s money fuelled plans to build on the land. Her dad must have left his beloved cafe to her for some reason, but in amongst the chipped formica and dirty walls Annie is finding it hard to what that reason may be.

This book is the first in a brand new series set on Cherry Pie Island, however rather than being full length each part is a novella. Personally I am not a big fan of splitting books into parts and would prefer to wait to see if a full book will follow later. However as I have loved Jenny Oliver’s previous books so much I was willing to give this a try, and I suppose as the other parts follow on in the coming months fairly quickly then it could just be like taking continuous breaks from the one book.

Anyway the length aside, I did enjoy the initial premise of Annie returning to take over the cafe that she has found family memories of. Injecting some new life into a run down family business never gets old for me and in this case I found that the side stories held just as much if not more of my interest. Although as predicted just as I was wanted to delve further into certain characters, especially Matt and River, the book ended and this is why I still fail to see the appeal of splitting stories into parts. It does give you a small taster of what is to come and on reading I could see which characters would play a part further down the line.

In the past I have always read Jenny Oliver’s books greedily and finished them in one or two sittings, but this time I was left wanting more. I like to have my cake and eat it! If you have yet to discover this author though then this book will definitely whet your appetite for more.
Nadia Bolz-Weber is not your typical pastor. She is a recovering alcoholic, heavily tattooed and uses language my mother wouldn't want to hear. But like most of us, she wrestles and struggles and strives and yearns.

Nadia shares some really interesting and beautiful insights, some fodder for exploring for sure, and I added a few pages of notes to my journal as I read through this one. Though some of the Catholic-style rituals of her Lutheran church are not my norm, some of them sounded wonderful and deeply connecting to the Spirit of God, and made me examine and question some of my preconceptions.

Nadia certainly isn't afraid, or rather she is very brave, to share some of the darker sides of herself, which allows us to see them in ourselves. I loved her love of Jesus and her frank admission of both running to Him and from Him at the same time. She shares tales of great success, and tales of it just falling apart. And isn't that what many of us battle? Trying to over achieve to earn something we are seeking, all the while hoping no one sees our struggle, and not accepting that God loves us in spite of all that. Nadia keeps it real, while maintaining and sharing her own faith and the very real face of Jesus in others.

Amazon rating: 4.8 stars
See part one here

9. What advice would you give aspiring writers?

Keep at it. It’s hard in the face of rejection, but if you want to be a writer, you’ll find the time, the strength and the courage.

10.What are you reading right now?
The Girl in the Ice, Rob Bryndza

11.Which do you prefer kindle or paper books?
I like to switch. I tend to load my own books onto the kindle to read back, and I love it for travel. But I do like to dive into a print edition too, so I buy lots of paperbacks.
I also get a lot of paperback proofs sent to me so I read those, plus I am auto approved on Netgalley for lots of the publishers because I’m asked for quotes for new books.

12.Would you recommend self-publishing? What made you decide to go down this route?
I went down the self-publishing route after trying twelve years to get a traditional deal. It was what I’ve always wanted. So I self-published to try and get some readers behind me and then go for a traditional deal, which I did.
I would recommend that a writer does what they want to do, rather than what they feel they should do. Some writers prefer to go for an agent, some direct to a publisher and some self-publish. There is no right or wrong way – just do whatever you feel comfortable with.

13. For someone who has not read your books before, how would you describe your writing style?
It’s dark, gritty and emotional. I’m not afraid to take you into the mind of anyone nasty but, equally, I like to show good and bad sides to everyone.

14. Do you have any new books in the pipeline?
Yes, but I’m unable to talk about them at the moment…

15. Where is the best place for readers to find out more about you?
I have a website at www.melsherratt.co.uk and I love chatting to readers on * Facebook and * Twitter. I think I ‘met’ you on Facebook.

16. Surprise us with something we don't know about you.
I’m afraid of the dark…

17. And very importantly..... which do you prefer tea or coffee?
Coffee, without a doubt.

FEATURED AUTHOR this month is an ereader1uk favorite, Mel Sherratt.

Here is the first part of her Q&A, written by our regular contributor, Susan Lobban.

Written in the Scars: An emotional and gritty drama full of suspense

1. How did you decide to become an author? What/Who inspired you?

I’ve always wanted to write a book, although I hadn’t planned on taking so long to become a published author. Now it’s my career. Like any job, it has its ups and downs, but I get to do what I love every day. Through the years, my inspiration has come from authors such as Marian Keyes, Lisa Jewell, and Rowan Coleman. More recently, it’s been Rowan Coleman, Fionnuala Kearney and Talli Roland.

2. Can you describe your typical writing day?

There’s never a time when I’m not working on two books at a time. If I’m writing one, I’m usually editing another and vice versa. So to fit it all in, I try to write or edit 2000 words first thing every morning when I’m fresh. If I’m editing, I’ll then continue editing for the rest of the day. If I’m drafting a book, I’ll add more to the 2000. Mornings are dedicated to writing and editing. In the afternoon, I catch up with everything else, emails, interviews such as this one, social media and marketing, organizing events and travel etc.

3. Where do you write?

I have my own office at home now, but you can always find me with my laptop on the sofa early mornings.

4. How do you come up with your plot lines/characters?

I find ideas for storylines everywhere, and once I get one into my head, then the character pops in there too. It’s the only way I can explain it! For instance Written in the Scars came from a line I heard in a song, and then the ideas from that just flowed.

5. How difficult is it to switch between writing different genres - which comes easier?

I find it quite easy to switch between genres, to be honest. The Estate Series are a mixture of women’s fiction and crime thriller, so a lot of the time with my crime thrillers, I have to layer in more darkness once I’ve written it. But after writing three novels as Marcie Steele, I’m finding that I want to get back to characters that punch and swear, with plotlines that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I much prefer to be scared while I’m writing, I think!

6. Do you ever get writer's block and if so how do you get through it?

I don’t get writers block but I do get days when the words just don’t come as planned. Now I’ve realised that this is because I haven’t worked out the plot enough to write it, so I do something else. Away from the writing is when ideas form, so I have to trust my instinct. I find that I get up the next day with everything sorted and I have to quickly write notes to get it all down. When I then sit down to write it out, it all flows again.

7. Did you always plan The Estate and Allie Shenton books to become series?

The Estate Series – yes. I wanted to write about different characters in each book, therefore making each book a standalone novel, but I wanted them to be linked by the place they were set. There are one or two characters that are featured in each one, for instance, housing officer, Josie Mellor.
DS Allie Series – no. My journey to publication is a long one. I started off writing women’s fiction, then the cross genre of The Estate Series. Because my agent at the time found them hard to sell, I was asked to write a story with a police element in it, so I wrote Taunting the Dead. And blimey, did that take off when I self-published it. I hadn’t intended on writing about Allie again as I didn’t particularly like writing police procedurals, and really the series is part police procedural/part psychological thriller, but after the success of Taunting the Dead, I enjoyed writing about Allie so when my publisher asked if I would write two more, I did. Will there be any more after Only the Brave, book 3? Not at the moment, but never say never.

8. Why did you choose to write your romance books under a pseudonym?

I self-published Stirred with Love under the pen name of Marcie Steele because I wanted to use it as a guinea pig to see if it was a viable option to self-publish Taunting the Dead, which had been turned down by lots of traditional publishers. I wanted to be sure that if I did self-publish it, I would know the best way to do it. Also back in 2011, self-publishing was frowned upon, and it was a huge gamble to take. So using a different name was great to try.
I picked up book one, An Untamed Land, as a freebie introduction to the series. It's certainly one that you could read as a stand alone novel without having to read on, but if you're like me, you just might want to know what's in store for the characters in book 2!

An Untamed Land is a Christian fiction, that tells the story of Norwegian immigrants to the Dakota territory in the late 19th century. Two brothers, Roald and Carl, sail to Amerika with their wives and children on the promise of a place to farm and raise their families. After their parents and family scrimp and save for three years to pay for their tickets, the group are faced with trials from the very start—Kaaren's premature labor, all arriving in a foreign land without knowing a lick of the language, and the unexpectedly long and arduous trek across the states.

Once in a while, the prose gets a little flowery in its descriptives, but the story was very interesting. It certainly didn't glamorize the hard life of a nineteenth century farmer in the prairie wilds of Dakota winters, or the trials and challenges they faced from the very beginning—from the culture shock of 1880's New York City, to the grueling hard work they endured to reach their dreams.

Without giving away the story, it's not all promised dreams & happily ever after, and it's certainly not predictable at all. The detail of their lives, the contrasting relationships within the family, and the unpredictable storyline makes it a worthwhile read.
Featured author interview by Susan Lobban

1. How did you decide to become an author? What/Who inspired you?

I get this question a lot and I’m afraid I don’t have a very good
answer, because I don’t think there was ever a time when I didn’t want
to be a writer.
When I was in primary school I always loved any
kind of creative writing assignments. When my family bought its first
home computer (an Acorn Archimedes), I used to spend hours with a friend
co-writing and typing our own Choose Your Own Adventure-type stories
(sample titles: Ninja City, Terror of the Catacombs). I would then print
these out and sell them to my school friends, so I guess I was slightly
ahead of the curve in experimenting with self-publishing.
In
terms of inspiration, I was fortunate that my family and teachers all
encouraged me to write, which meant I never lacked the confidence to
show other people my work. Reading Stephen King’s On Writing on a trip
to Venice in 2000 was another big influence. The original UK hardback
had a short story competition in the back, and the story I wrote was my
first attempt at fiction for a few years. It didn’t win, or even get
close, but I liked it enough to keep at it and write more stories and,
eventually, novels.

2. Can you describe your typical writing day?
Unfortunately, there’s no such thing. I have a day job and three
children, so the writing has to be slotted in wherever it will fit. Most
often, it’ll be the end of the day when I get a chance to hit the
keyboard, but sometimes I’ll fit in a page or two over lunchtime or
while commuting. My usual target is to get at least 500 words down every
day, which is manageable even on really busy days, but it means I can
do more on the days where I happen to have more time.

3. Where do you write?
Again, there’s no one location. Ideally, I can work in my study at
home, but that’s not always where I am when I have time to write, so by
necessity, I’m kind of a nomadic writer. Taking the most recent book
I’ve completed as an example, it was written in cafes, in pubs, on park
benches, in hotel rooms, on the couch, in bed, in the Egyptian exhibit
at the British Museum, at children’s birthday parties, in various
branches of McDonalds and on trains all over the country. Trains are
actually my ideal writing location. You get an allotted time,
uninterrupted, with no internet - perfect.

4. How do you come up with your plot lines/characters?
I come up with the characters first. I like to have two or three strong
characters through whose eyes we can view the action. I think about who
they are, what’s brought them into the story, what their background is.
Around the same time I’ll try to come up with an arresting opening and a
few of the big scenes I want to happen in the book. When I have those
building blocks, I’ll try to piece together a plot. The plot is the part
that’s most subject to change as I write.

5. What made you set your novels in America with an American protagonist?
The simple answer is because, as much as I enjoy reading British crime
fiction, I’ve always loved American thrillers even more. From The Three
Investigators books I read in school to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell
Hammett, James Ellroy and Elmore Leonard, John D MacDonald and Ira
Levin, right up to modern American writers like Harlan Coben, Michael
Connelly and Lee Child. And of course, Lee Child isn’t actually an
American, which gave me the idea to try it myself.
As a sweeping
generalisation, the pace of the American mystery thriller differs from
British crime writing, which tends to focus more on the procedural
aspect of solving crimes. I like both approaches, and I think the reason
I enjoy reading Ian Rankin so much is because his work feels like a
blend of the traditions. I also think it’s more permissible in an
American thriller to define your hero or heroine as a lone wolf, working
on their own initiative and sometimes setting them against the
authorities.
Aside from that, I think the type of stories I write
lend themselves to an American setting. The canvas is so much bigger,
the suspension of disbelief is easier, not least because some of the big
media events in America often sound like the plot for a movie.

6. Do you ever get writer's block and if so how do you get through it?
So far, I’ve been incredibly fortunate not to have had any kind of
debilitating writer’s block. I get demotivated and tired out and
pissed-off occasionally, like you do in any job, but so far it’s nothing
that I haven’t been able to resolve by taking a couple of days off and
then getting my butt back into the chair to write.

7. What advice would you give aspiring writers?
The advice everyone always gives is the same: write.
It sounds trite, but it’s absolutely true. Wanting to be a writer is
not like other ambitions - if you have a laptop, or even a pen and
paper, there’s nothing holding you back except yourself. If you want to
be a writer, write every day and voila: you are a writer, and you will
be getting better with practice.
The other thing that was really
useful for me was to set that manageable target and make sure I found
time every day to write at least 500 words. You can write 500 words in
half an hour; in 15 minutes, even. If you write 500 words, 6 days a
week, you’ll have a draft of a novel in 6 months.

8. What are you reading right now?
I’m reading Stasi Child by David Young, which is a debut thriller set
in East Berlin in the 70s. I love that kind of recent-historical
fiction, like Robert Harris’s Fatherland and Tom Rob Smith’s Child 44,
and so far this one is really great.
I’m a comic geek, so I’m
also catching up on the trades of Kurt Busiek’s Astro City and Matt
Fraction’s Hawkeye, both of which I love.

Part 2 coming later this month!

Not surprising really--they can cause sleeplessness, headaches and eye strain from the backlit screen. One way round that has been to lower the brightness setting at night, or read with one of the off-white backgrounds.

Research shows that the blue light spectrum is a major culprit, so newer Kindle Fires have a "blue shade" that filters out the blue light known to cause these problems.

To use: Pull down the settings menu, tap blue shade, and select the "turn off at sunrise" feature so the screen is back to regular settings during the day.

I've tried this with the new Kindle Fire HD 8. I've been reading with a Paperwhite for a couple of years, so I was skeptical about this. Initially, the shaded screen was a little off-putting, but within half an hour I was used to it and have been enjoying nighttime reading with the Fire.
9. Which do you prefer kindle or paper books?

If I had to chose, I’d go for paperbacks. But I read from both and equally enjoy the experience.

10. Did you ever consider self publishing? Do you think this a good or bad thing for the future of books.

I started off self-published! Beyond Grace’s Rainbow, was self published in 2012 as an ebook only. It was a bestseller on Amazon, Kobo, iBooks. Scariest and most fun time ever. Thankfully for me, my success got me noticed with an agent and in turn, with my publisher. Harper Collins republished Beyond Grace’s Rainbow and since then I’ve had two further books out with a contract for a further two. So, for me it was the right thing to do. Personally speaking, I think there is room for both.
However, if you do self-publish, do it well. Make sure that your book, the cover, the edits, the story, are as professional and as good as any traditionally published books. If not you’ll get lost in the gazillions of self pubbed books that are out there.

11. For someone who has not read your books before, how would you describe your
writing style?

A reader described me as the Queen of Emotional writing and I liked that description. I definitely write from the heart. But I promise that as well as making you reach for the kleenex, I will make you smile and laugh too. My editor says that I have a conversational tone, so my writing connects to readers immediately. I hope you all agree!
I have been compared to Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes, Maeve Binchy by readers. In fact one reader said that if Maeve Binchy and Marian Keyes had a love child, it would be Carmel Harrington. That made me smile and feel very honoured all at the same time.

12. Do you have any new books in the pipeline?

I’m working re-writes for my fourth novel, The Road Back Home, which is a story about the Guinness family, who spend a summer travelling around Europe in a campervan! 14. Surprise us with something we don't know about you?

I once partied on a private jet owned by U2. And not that I’m name dropping, but the lads might have been there at the time. Oh, the joys of a misspent youth!

15. and very importantly..... which do you prefer tea or coffee?
Ah here, what an impossible question to answer. I drink both, by the gallon!
Gun to head …. I’d probably pick …. I can’t do it, I can’t answer!

*FEATURED AUTHOR* This month is Carmel Harrington, who is delighted that she has been chosen for December as she has a very Christmassy release out now! Thank you so much Carmel for taking part. Here is the first part of her Q&A.
1. How did you decide to become an author? What/Who inspired you?

I’ve always written. As a young girl, I always had a diary. Then I began writing short stories when I was about ten. My problem was that I never wanted to share what I wrote. I was too shy. It took me until I was forty, to follow my lifelong ambition. It was my children who inspired me as it happens. When the kids came along, I knew I had to lead by example. Can’t expect them to be fearless and follow their dreams, if I didn’t do the same myself.

2. Can you describe your typical writing day?

Monday to Friday, the children are in school from 9am to 2pm.
We are early risers, about 7am most days and for two hours its a marathon of getting kids dressed, washed, fed, lunches made, housework done! Then at 9.15, with a cuppa in hand, I start to write. I have to set my alarm for 1.30, because there are time when I get so absorbed in what I do, I don’t realise how late it is!
Afternoons are all about the kids, then once they go to bed at 730pm, I’m back working again. Usually in the evenings, I’m doing some promotional work. And right now, I’ve lots to do, with my new book out, Every Time A Bell Rings. I try very hard to keep my weekends free, family time is precious.

3. Where do you write?

At home. I live very rural and am lucky to have a spectacular view from every window in our house, so I like to sit by a window. Right now, I’m working at my kitchen table.

4. How do you come up with your plot lines/characters?

The newspapers, radio, songs, overheard conversations…… the slightest thing can make a story come alive in my head. For e.g. yesterday, I was writing a Christmas Short Story for Woman’s Way magazine. I was trying to come up with a story, when a balloon from my sons 4th birthday caught my eye. It had floated up to the ceiling and attached to the end of the string, was a card my daughter had made for me. From that image, a complete story came to life. Funny what can trigger my imagination!

5. Which of your characters are you most like?

There’s parts of me in all my characters. I think I’m a cross between Belle in Every Time A Bell Rings and Grace in Beyond Grace’s Rainbow. But there’s a good lot of me in Gerry, from Beyond Grace’s Rainbow too, the dramatic over the top side!

6. Do you ever get writer's block and if so how do you get through it?

Thankfully it’s not happened to me yet. But I would say, if it does, it would mean that
I need a break.

7. What advice would you give aspiring writers?

Once you have written your manuscript, make sure it is the very best it can possibly be, before you submit to an agent or publisher. I’d invest in a good editor. Or at the very least, make sure that you get constructive feedback from writer friends.
Know the industry, be informed. There are a lot of options now for aspiring writers and publishers worldwide are now more accessible than ever before.
Get involved on twitter and Facebook with your favourite authors and publishers. Start a conversation with them; you may be surprised at how accessible they are!
Take advantage of any opportunities that are out there. For e.g. there are so many literary festivals on, not least of which this one! Empower yourself with knowledge. And enjoy the journey. Believe in yourself and know that it will happen one day. The when is the only bit that is unknown.

8. What are you reading right now?

I’ve got a couple of books on the go - Cecelia Ahern’s The Marble Collector and a manuscript called Hooked, from a new writer and friend, called Catherina Hogan. Both are excellent.

Part 2 of the interview coming later in the month!

I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of this book through NetGalley and was delighted with this well written legal thriller.

Aroostine Higgins is a Native American who, at the age of seven, was adopted by white parents when her grandfather died. She retained a lot of her native intelligence and was a natural choice to investigate a problem with another Native American tribe in Oregon. Using a combination of native intuition and her legal training as a Federal Prosecutor she attempts to unravel a scheme of embezzlement at a tribal casino.

Her investigation leads her to more than she expected including theft of military weapons, murder and an attempt on the lives of both her and her husband.

All in all, a very intriguing plot masterfully told. This will keep you turning page right up to the conclusion.
